MY BEST YEARS BEGIN NOW
I'm in my 60s. I'm Not Trying to Be 30 Again.
I Just Want to Feel Like Myself Again.
I wanted more energy, to feel comfortable in my clothes, and to stop feeling like getting older meant giving up on feeling good.
After years of trying diets, cutting out foods, and promising myself I’d “start again Monday,” I finally discovered a much simpler approach.
Somewhere Along the Way, I Stopped Feeling Like Me
I don’t know exactly when it happened.
One day I looked in the mirror and realized I didn’t quite recognize the woman looking back at me.
I was older, of course. That part didn’t bother me. I’ve earned every one of these years.
What bothered me was how I felt.
I didn’t have the energy I used to. My clothes didn’t fit the way I wanted them to. And losing a few pounds seemed so much harder than it did when I was younger.
I’d tried diets before. I’d cut things out, counted things, and told myself more times than I can remember, “Monday, I’m going to get serious.”
Eventually, I realized something:
I didn’t want another diet.
I wanted something simple that could fit into the life I already enjoy.
Then I Started Looking at Things Differently
I finally stopped asking myself, “What diet should I try next?”
Instead, I started asking:
“What are a few simple things I could actually enjoy doing every day?”
I wasn’t interested in starving myself, giving up everything I loved, or spending my life at the gym.
I still wanted to go out for dinner. I still wanted dessert once in a while. And yes… I still wanted the occasional cinnamon bun at the farmers market.
I wanted something that worked with my life—not against it.
That’s when I came across a simple daily routine that caught my attention.
It started with something I already enjoyed every day…
a warm cup of tea.
The truth was, things just weren’t as easy as they had been earlier in my life.
I could eat less and still struggle with my weight. I could get a decent night’s sleep and still feel tired by the afternoon. The things that used to work for me didn’t seem to work the same way anymore.
And I kept wondering why.
I Was Eating Less Than I Used To… So Why Was Losing Weight Harder?
I couldn’t understand it.
I wasn’t eating huge meals. I wasn’t sitting on the couch all day. And I certainly wasn’t eating more than I did when I was younger.
But the weight seemed to come on easier… and getting it off felt almost impossible.
My energy wasn’t what it used to be either. By mid-afternoon, I’d sometimes feel like I could use a nap — and things I used to do without thinking suddenly felt like they took more effort.
And everywhere I looked, someone seemed to have the answer.
Another diet. Another supplement. Another expensive program. Another “miracle” solution promising I could have my old body back.
I didn’t want my 30-year-old body back.
I just wanted to feel comfortable in the one I had now.
Maybe I didn't need more willpower.
Maybe I needed a different approach for this stage of my life.
The Part That Bothered Me Most Wasn’t the Number on the Scale
It was the little things.
Standing in front of my closet and realizing half the clothes I loved didn’t fit the way they used to.
Pulling on a favorite pair of pants… then quietly putting them back.
Choosing the loose top because it hid my middle a little better.
And every once in a while, catching my reflection and wondering when I had started looking so different from the woman I still felt like inside.
I wasn’t looking for perfection.
I didn’t need to wear the same size I wore at 30.
I just wanted to lose some of the extra weight, have more energy, and feel good getting dressed again.
That didn’t seem like too much to ask.
I Finally Stopped Fighting With Myself
Once I stopped trying to do things the way I did in my 30s and 40s, something changed.
I started focusing less on being perfect and more on doing simple things I could actually live with.
Instead of trying to force my body to respond the way it did 20 or 30 years ago, I started working with where I was in life now.
And my simple tea routine became part of that change.
It was easy. It fit naturally into my day. And for once, I didn’t feel like I was constantly dieting or depriving myself just to make progress.
I simply made it part of my routine and gave myself some time.
Little by little, I began feeling more like myself again.
I had more motivation to get out and enjoy my day. I started feeling better in my clothes. And for the first time in years, I felt encouraged instead of defeated.
Most importantly, I felt hopeful again.
So… What Changed for Me?
It wasn't another diet plan.
It wasn't a list of foods I wasn't allowed to eat.
And it wasn't some complicated routine I had to organize my life around.
It was something surprisingly simple that fit into something I was already doing every day.
That's what made me curious enough to look closer.
One Last Thing…
If you're reading this and thinking, “Maybe I'm just too old to change,” please don't sell yourself short.
I'm not trying to have the body I had decades ago.
I'm interested in feeling good today.
There are still places I want to go, people I want to spend time with, things I want to experience—and plenty of cinnamon buns I'm going to enjoy along the way.
I'm not finished living.
And neither are you.
Here's to whatever comes next.
